Why Leeuwenhoek?

Thanks to a wonderful chemistry teacher in my scientific secondary school, I first read Paul De Kruif’s book “Microbe Hunters” 26 years ago. The book was so real and interesting to me. Consequently, I have always remembered Antonie van Leeuwenhoek’s story and I became a great admirer of him ever since. As a young girl dreaming of becoming a scientist, I found in his story a role model and I was able to picture myself doing those great endeavours someday, motivated by scientific curiosity and societal necessity. Furthermore, his story started me off on a career in the medical lab and for more than 20 years I have been realising my dream.

Although he’s not as well-known as other scientists, Leeuwenhoek’s the father of microbiology, the microscope and the founding father of protozoology. Especially relevant, he was the first person to describe red and white blood cells, skeletal cells, sperm and many other “wee animalcules”. As a result, his works set-up the development and improvement of the light microscope waking up the interest of peer scientists to carefully look through magnifying lenses to understand the minuscule size of life. While attempting to improve the augmentation lenses to observe the threads of the fibre in the fabrics at his shop in Delft, Holland he learnt to grind and perfect lenses. Hence, he built microscopes that threw him into a sea of curiosity that set him to observing anything that could be placed under his microscope and studying the unseen around him. Undoubtedly, he is one of the first and most important microbe hunters.
